Farewell My Concubine: the Beijing Opera

Beijing Opera version of historical event about King of Chu. “Farewell My Concubine” is Tomson Film Co. produced art films, adapted from the Book Review of the same name novel by Chen Kaige directed, Book Review, reed screenwriter, Leslie Cheung , Gong Li , Zhang Fengyi starred. The film revolves around the half-century of joys and sorrows of two Peking opera actors , showing the thinking and understanding of traditional culture, human living conditions and human nature. In 1993, the film was released in mainland China and Hong Kong, China. Since then, it has been released in many countries and regions around the world, and it broke the box office record of mainland Chinese art films in the United States.

In 1993, the film won the Palme d’Or, the highest award at the Cannes International Film Festival in France , and became the first Chinese film to receive this honor. [2] In addition, the film also won the American Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the International Film Critics League Award. And many other international awards, and is the only Chinese film that has won the Palme d’Or award at the Cannes International Film Festival and the best foreign language film in the United States at the same time. In 1994, Leslie Cheung won the Special Contribution Award of the 4th China Film Performing Arts Society for this film . In 2005, “Farewell My Concubine” was selected as one of the ” 100 Best Movies in Global History ” by Time Magazine .
