Lanna Studies Institute, Chiang Mai

Lanna Studies Institute is located in Thep Ratana Rajsuda Building, Chiang Mai Rajabhat University. It is established to exhibit precious Lanna knowledge and cultural activities, to support global foreign languages and Thai languages studies, academic service and modern media, to enhance language skills and develop university students’ teachers’ staffs’ and local people’s language knowledge and skills, and to support networking and academic collaboration between institutes and studies in the country and abroad. This institute is also aimed to support conservative works, to spread art and culture and to look after art works and nature. The building is contemporary Lanna style with 4-storey and 1,950 square meters mainly providing main exhibitions as followed:-

Archives displays Lanna historical documents, Lanna local people lifestyle in 8 Northern provinces: Thai Yuan, Thai Lue, Thai Kern, Thai Yong, Thai Yai and Lua tribes, folklore knowledge such as Lanna language and literature, handicraft art works, music and folklore dancing. Lanna Thai style treatment or Mor Mueang exhibition provides knowledge about Buddhism, Lanna tributes, and important Lanna Buddhism objects. Honor hall lists the university’s and Lanna Studies Center’s benefactors’ names. King Naresuan room exhibits the biography of King Naresuan and materials related to his highness.

Apart from the exhibitions, there are short-term training about Lanna art and culture, the important temples in Chiang Mai tourism, the local snack teaching, banana leaf artworks teaching, which is the uniqueness of Lanna, Lanna language studies and Lanna language writing courses. Moreover, the Lanna Studies Institute also offers seminar room, kitchen, meeting room, the Buddha Image room and Kan Took food serving style welcoming party for visitors.

How to get there:

  • From Manee Nopparat Road, keep straight and turn left a little before Chang Phueak Gate to enter Chang Phueak Road. Continue for about 1.5 kilometres, the university is on the left. For those arriving from Lampang, drive along Chiang Mai-Lampang Superhighway, turn left at Khuang Singh Intersection to enter Chang Phueak Road. Continue for 650 metres more. The university is on the left.
