The meaning of twenty-four solar terms

Twenty-four solar terms are my country’s traditional history and culture. Many people know about it, but not many people can accurately explain the meaning of each solar term.

Lichun : The bucket refers to the northeast. It is the first one of the twenty-four solar terms. The implication is that the beginning of the spring, “the sun and the sting, the product is spring”, after the beginning of spring, everything is revived and the four seasons of the year begin.

Rain : bucket refers to Ren. At this time, the spring breeze is blowing, the ice and snow melt, the air is humid, and the rain increases, so it is called rain. People often say: “It’s getting warmer at the beginning of spring, and rain is busy sending fertilizer.”

Jingzhe : Douzhiding. This solar term means that the weather becomes warmer after the “Beginning of Spring”, and the thunders of spring begin to tremble, and various hibernating animals hibernating in the soil will wake up and start moving, so it is called a startle sting. The proverb goes: “A sting plows the soil, and the spring equinox is ventilated.” “The thunder stings before the thunder, and the heavy rain is like a dragon.”

Equinox : Fight refers to Ren. The sun is above the equator on the vernal equinox, and the day and night in the northern and southern hemispheres are equal on this day, so it is called the vernal equinox. The vernal equinox is the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere. Farmer proverbs in various places include: “Plant vegetables in the spring equinox, pick melons in the summer” (Hunan), “Plant hemp beans in the spring equinox, and grow wheat and garlic in the autumn equinox” (Anhui).

Qingming : Fighting refers to the Ding. At this time, the climate is refreshing and warm, the grasses and trees begin to sprout, everything begins to grow, and farmers are busy ploughing and planting in spring. In the past, on the day of Qingming Festival, some people planted willow twigs at the door, and went to the outskirts to go out and sweep their graves.

Gu Yu : Dou Zhigui. It is the meaning of rain-grown grains. Because rain water nourishes the earth and grains can grow, Guyu means “rain-growing hundred grains.” As the saying goes, “Before and after the rain, plant melons and beans”.

Lixia : The bucket refers to the southeast. It is the beginning of summer, and from then on, everything is flourishing. It is customary to regard Lixia as the most important solar term when the temperature rises significantly, the summer heat is approaching, thunderstorms increase, and crops enter the peak season to grow.

Xiaoman : Fight your nails. Since Xiaoman, summer crops such as barley and winter wheat have already produced fruit and have full grains, but they are not yet mature, so they are called Xiaoman.

Mang species : The Big Dipper is pointing. At this time, it is most suitable for sowing cereal crops with awns. At the same time, “awn” refers to awn crops such as wheat, barley, etc., and “planting” refers to seeds. The awn seed means that wheat and other awn crops are mature.

Summer Solstice : Beidou points to B. At the “summer solstice”, the sun almost shines directly above the Tropic of Cancer, and the sun is highest at noon in the northern hemisphere. This day is the longest day in the northern hemisphere and the shortest night in the northern hemisphere. From this day, into the hot season, everything in the world grows most vigorously at this time.

Xiaoshu : Fighting refers to Xin. The weather is already very hot, but it is not yet the hottest, so it is called Xiaoshu. At this time, it is before and after the beginning of the fall.

Dashu : Fighting refers to C. The summer heat is the hottest solar term of the year, and it is around the clock. This solar term has a lot of rain and water, in the proverb of “small heat, big heat, drown the mouse”.

Liqiu : Beidou points to the southwest. From this day on, autumn begins, the autumn is high and fresh, the moon is bright and the breeze is clear. After that, the temperature gradually dropped from the hottest.

Chushu : Dou Zhiwu . At this time, the summer heat has come to an end, and the heat is about to dissipate. It is a turning point in the temperature drop. It is a symbol of the cooler climate and the end of summer.

Bailu : Fighting refers to Kui. The weather turned cooler and the ground water vapor condensed.

Autumnal Equinox : Fighting means already. The autumnal equinox is the same as the vernal equinox. The sunlight hits the equator almost directly, and day and night are almost equal. According to the autumn theory of our country’s old calendar, this day is exactly half of the ninety days in autumn, so it is called the autumnal equinox. However, it is stipulated in astronomy that autumn in the northern hemisphere begins at the autumnal equinox.

Han Lu : Fight your nails. After Bailu, the weather turned cooler and dew began to appear. When it came to cold dew, there were more dew days and the temperature became lower. Therefore, some people say that cold is the air of dew, white first and then cold, which means that the climate will gradually become colder. The water vapor condenses into white dewdrops.

Frost : Fight refers to Xu. The weather is already cold and frost is beginning, so it is called frost.

Lidong : The bucket refers to dry. Traditionally, our people regard this day as the beginning of winter.

Xiaoxue : Fight against yourself. The temperature dropped and the snow began to fall, but it was not yet the time when the snow was heavy, so it was called Xiaoxue. Before and after light snow, snow began to fall in the Yellow River Basin, and the north has entered the freezing season.

Daxue : Fighting refers to Kui. Before and after the heavy snowfall, the area of the Yellow River Basin gradually accumulated snow; while in the north, it was already a severe winter of “thousands of miles of ice and thousands of miles of snow drifting.”

Winter Solstice : Douzhizi. On the day of the winter solstice, the northern hemisphere has the shortest day and the longest night, and it begins to enter nine cold days. Astronomy stipulates that this day is the beginning of winter in the northern hemisphere. After the winter solstice, the daylight in the northern hemisphere gradually grows longer. As the saying goes: After eating winter solstice noodles, one day will grow longer.

Osamu : Fighting fingers. After Osamu, the cold season began. The cold air accumulates for a long time and is cold. Xiaohan means the weather is cold but not to the extreme.

Dahan : Fighting refers to ugliness, Dahan means the weather is extremely cold. Around the Great Cold is the coldest season of the year. Dahan was just after the ninth, the beginning of the ninth. The proverb goes: “Walk on the ice in three nines and four nines.” After the severe cold, Lichun came, and the weather became warmer. So far the earth has revolved around the sun, completing a cycle.
